Nutritional advice for thyroid problems Back

The thyroid should be tested by taking the temperature on three consecutive days (females can only perform this test on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th day of the menstruation, males always). If the temperature is below normal (98.6 F) or above, it may indicate under- or over functioning of the thyroid gland (hypo-, hyperthyroidim). Measuring the temperature appears to be the most reliable test to accurately diagnose this hard to detect disease.

If a malfunctioning of the thyroid is detected, depending on the severity of the result, thyroid hormone or nutrients should be administered to the patient. Thyroid hormone is given by the GP to treat hypothyroidism, nutrients such as kelp, tyrosine, iodine together with pepsin can be administered by a clinical nutritionist.

For hyperthyroidism, anti-thyroid drugs are given, which cause the thyroid to produce less thyroid hormone. Doctors may also recommend to radiate the thyroid. Radioactive iodine is also available for this condition.

Remedies that support hypothyroidism are: kelp, tyrosine, iodine
For hyperthyroidism, also knows as Grave’s disease vitamin C, essential fatty acids, niacin, calcium, magnesium have shown some good effects in treating the disease.

However, a detailed blood panel will give more clues on the total health picture of the patient.
