Functions of bile are to neutralize chyme, aid in fat digestion, promote absorption of fat, hormonal type of action, excrete bile pigments, cholesterol, metals, drugs.
Since bile aids in fat digestion and absorption, patients with an obstructed bile duct or a removed gallbladder cannot properly digest fat. Stool of a person with lacking bile is offensive smelling and loaded with fats. A reduced intake of fats is recommended until the problem is under control.
It is essential to have sufficient and high-quality bile produced in the liver, this will prevent the buildup of gallstones. Gallstones are naturally resolved in healthy bile, it is therefore crucial to focus on a patient’s bile production. Nutrients that aid the breaking down of the stones are administered and focus is placed on the liver to improve the quality and amount of bile.
The patient’s ability to absorb oil-soluble vitamins is virtually inexistent. Nutrients fed to the patient e.g. vitamins A, D, E and K, which are usually oil-soluble should be given in a water-dispersible or emulsified form for absorption.
