Biochemical individuality Back

It’s the differences between us that stimulated good conversation, unique new developments and creations and at times confrontation. Our individuality does not stop with our differences in human trait, it goes deeper into our anatomy, physiology, psychology, endocrines, enzympes etc. We are all extraordinarily and exceptionally biochemically special.

There is no such thing as the average person – the differences in anatomy and metabolism from person to person influence our health. For optimal function we each have different nutritional needs and specific environmental requirements. This explains why some of us are better at detoxifying drugs, low fat diets cause some people to gain weight and another person may need higher levels of nutrients than another person.

This shows itself for example in some of us getting beneficial effects from taking e.g. Prozac, others may suffer only side-effects and do not get the intended benefits. And side-effects in each individual are different, some people may suffer from headaches, others from dry mouth, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting etc. the list is endless. The reason the side-effects are different for everyone is our own unique system and body. Medicine, supplements, nutrients are assimilated differently in each and everyone of us. In fact, it is rather difficult for a pharmaceutical company to manufacture a drug that works for the majority of people due to this individuality.

Also, requirements for nutrients are completely different for each individual. Some of our bodies may be entirely satisfied with a supplementation of 50mg of magnesium or any particular mineral, while others must intake 1500mg per day.

Hitherto, research on this topic is not at an advanced state. Variations of our enzymatic processes, endocrine functions, organ shape and size, psychological make up call for extensive studies for which the funds are largely not available.

How different we really are biochemically has not, and possibly cannot be accurately expressed. The ‘average’ model of a human cannot be pinned down. Individual ranges are simply too significant to be generalized.

Yet, fact is, my liver, for example, may have a completely different shape and size from yours, it may detoxify and deactive toxins and produce an average amount of cholesterol, while another person’s liver is seriously overwhelmed with the same toxins and manufacture an excess of cholesterol, which leads to elevated cholesterol levels. The biochemical differences make my liver much more forgiving than the other person’s. Or, I may have a deficiency in endocrine functions somewhere in my body, a hyperactive thyroid caused by inefficient or lacking digestive functions and/or breaking down of protein, especially tyrosine. This may be unique to me. You may have the opposite issue, a hypoactive thyroid, for which the exact causes must be established.

The differences also affect our psyche. Our psychology is largely still largely based on Freudian principles, meaning experiences we make in life which cause problems are analyzed and worked on. What is not taken into account is the biochemical makeup of the psychological functions, the cerebrum, its size and chemical functions. This disparity most likely has an impact on the effectiveness of a psychological or psychiatric treatment.

Even close family members may have completely different biochemical processes and functions. It has been observed that closely inbred rats may share some similarities in biochemical functions, yet even there ratios still vary.

If our biochemical uniqueness is taken into account when it comes to administering remedies, an improved solution can be found, yet all ratios must be properly analyzed to reach the proper conclusion. Extensive blood tests, analysis of unique ratios and individual supplementation is really the only way to get to the root of the problem. Universal, all-purpose medicine may work for some of us, but largely mask the symptoms and never get to the root cause.
